Agape Love – Aaron Varughese

The New Testament of the bible was written in Greek and one of the problems that come in translation is that there may be several different meanings for a single word. This is the case with the English word love. The Greeks had several different words to describe our English word love and some of them include, philia which is brotherly love, and another is agape. Agape love is the love that is from and of God.

The Bible says in 1 John 4:8 that “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” John declares the importance of love but what love is he referring to? John was referring to Agape and as Christians we need this to know God. The importance of God’s love is further stated in verse 10, “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”  God’s love is so unconditional and he is pouring out his love for us and wants us to be with him. God’s agape love is completely voluntary and something he chooses to give to us.  Even when we are lost and blinded by our life God has opened his arms wide to receive us unto him. It’s not because of any of our effort or merit that he desires us but rather because of his love for us.

Ever since the creation of man, he loved us because we are created in his image. When God created man and the world, everything was good and perfect but when man sinned against God then all of creation instantaneously became imperfect. God could have easily killed man and started over again but he did not because he loved us so much. God is righteous and just and we are all supposed to be judged in wrath for ours sins. The works we do cannot save us from that wrath but God in love came down for us in the form of man to rescue us. Jesus is agape love, Jesus is God and became the sin and restored the relationship with God. God has loved us and now he has also showed us the importance of agape love to us to God and to one another.

Agape love is the very essence of Christian life and it’s the MOST essential tool that we need in our life. “If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.  Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;”  We can have all the characteristic that a Christian needs to have such as prophetic powers or the ability to speak in tongue but if neither of that is centered around agape love then it’s meaning less. We must love as God showed us to love . We must always have the love of God which is unconditional. “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthins 13:13

In order to know God, we must love like him. God love us so unconditionally that it’s because of his love and not ours that we have come to salvation. His love has redeemed us and saved us from death. It’s because of his unconditional love for us that Adam was not destroyed when he sinned against God.  It’s because of agape love that Jesus became our sin and died for us on the cross.. Our works and gifts received from God without love are in vain but we are entrusted by God to share his love to another so that he or she may be saved by understanding of His love. The love of God should be the banner of our life and we should proclaim it more than anything that we have accomplished.
